Adelaide Fringe Review Of "Hypnolarious" By Ulysses
In his show “Hypnolarious” Pip the Comic Illusionist takes ten unsuspecting audience members and runs them through a series of visualisation and meditation type exercises. Based on how these participants react to his instructions and their level of compliance he is able to select the best candidates to complete a series of mind bending tasks… and that’s where the fun really begins! Pip explains that the average person normally goes into a state of hypnosis eight to nine times per day e.g. when you are driving to work in your car you are essentially in a state of hypnotic trance, so much so that you rarely remember what happened from one trip to the next, so it’s totally normal and safe.
After some psychological preparation, the participants are given a number of tasks that are designed to distort their memory and perception of reality, some examples include:
- forgetting the existence of names and numbers.
- inanimate objects coming to life.
- believing that they are really speaking to someone on their “shoe phone”.
- being unable to lift objects that are normally easy to pick up.
- displaying amazing levels of control over their own bodies.
The show takes a little while to gain momentum as the right candidates need to be chosen for the more challenging tricks and it can be quite random as it depends entirely on the audience and having the right type of participants in the show but once it gets started it is very entertaining to watch and witness.
